BESA: A CODE OF HONOR

Albanian Muslims Who Saved Jews During The Holocaust

Besa means literally “to keep the promise”.   One who acts according to Besa is someone who keeps his word, someone to whom one can trust one’s life and the lives of one’s family.

Both Albanian Christians and Muslims adhered to the Besa Code and saved Jews during World War II. Rather than hiding the Jews in attics or the woods, Albanians gave them clothes and treated them as part of the family.
